BUILDING STATE-OF-THE-ART ENDOVASCULAR STROKE CENTERS
Professor Grunwald is a Consultant in Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology and Associate Medical Director at Southend University. In 2007 she became Co-director of the Department for Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology at Saarland University and was awarded a professorship in Radiology in 2010. In addition she is board certified in Hospital Quality Management.
Prof. Grunwald has published more than 150 papers and several book chapters, mainly in the field of neurointervention and pre-hospital care. She is the author of the book “How to set up an acute stroke Service” (Springer 2012). She was the first in Europe to perform stroke thrombectomy with the Penumbra aspiration device and became the European Principal Investigator for the “Pivotal Penumbra” study. She has specific expertise in interventional procedures such as aneurysm coiling, intracerebral thrombectomy for emergency stroke as well as intra- and extracranial stenting.
Prof. Grunwald has an international reputation as an expert in implementing acute stroke services. She is the Vice President of the World Federation for Interventional Stroke Treatment (WIST) and has trained interventionalists and teams throughout the world. During her 5 years at Oxford University she initiated and ran the "SOS- A study of Survival and outcome after Stroke” study, which involved 35 UK stroke sites. She is an early member of the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) leadership group.
Prof. Grunwald is Co-founder and Medical Director of the life science company Brainomix. Prof. Grunwald was in the team that invented and piloted the Mobile Stroke Unit (Lancet Neurology 2012 and 2017).
As the Director for Neuroscience and Vascular Simulation at Anglia Ruskin University Prof. Grunwald runs conferences (www.ICCAonline.org) and hands-on training courses on catheter interventions, aneurysm and interventional stroke treatment. Her training and expertise enabled the successful implementation of an acute neurovascular stroke service at Southend University Hospital, whose results feature amongst the best in the country.
Prof. Grunwald strongly believes in high-fidelity simulation and a collaborative treatment approach. In her spare time she enjoys sailing and competition aerobatics.
